Granite rock, art of volcano

Granite stone is one of the types of building stones and igneous rocks. Igneous rock is formed by cooling of molten material inside the earth. Although around volcanic mountains this stone is found more than anywhere else, there are granite stones in other parts of the earth too.

Granite stone’s color variation is affected by its constituent minerals. The minerals in granite are quartz, feldspar, mica, black talc (biotite) and amphibole. The color of granite stone, this igneous stone is from gray to white, black, green, chocolate, red, etc. depending on the type of mineral and its amount.

Features and specifications of granite stone

Most granite stones are hard and dense due to their formation conditions and they are considered as the most resistant stones and the most durable building materials. Resistance to water penetration, impact and heat makes them one of the most resistant materials that are also used in industrial environments.

Resistance to water penetration

Due to its igneous nature, granite is one of the rocks that has low porosity, and this characteristic has caused it to absorb very little water.

Heat resistance

Granite rock formed from volcanic molten material. It definitely has high resistance to heat. Accordingly, granite is widely used in construction.

Resistance to corrosion and abrasion

Granite has high resistance to abrasion and corrosion. Therefore, granite stone can be used in places that have direct contact with chemicals or exposed to high traffic.

Granite stone application

Since granite has good resistance against various factors, it can be used in most parts of the building.

Granite stone can be used for stairs, parking, floor and wall of all buildings with any type of use When using it as facade of the building, it should be carefully considered that its strong connection with the building is guaranteed due to high weight and low adhesion strength of the stone. This stone is also used for landscaping in public, urban, and private open spaces, sidewalks, and curb building.

One of its important uses is for counters, cabinets and sinks in kitchens and washrooms due to its resistance to stains and water. Since it is a heat-resistant material and does not deform or break easily, it is a suitable and reliable material for the parts of the house that are exposed to direct heat radiation, such as stove sides. Placing a hot pot or pan directly on granite stones will not cause damage and abrasion on them as granite can withstand heat without being damaged or weakening.

Radioactive radiation and granite rock

When granite stone is placed in environments with x and gamma radiations, strong magnetic fields or strong chemicals, this stone emits radioactive waves and each element emits radiation in a specific period of time and causes specific pollution and cancer diseases. It happens in such a way that since 2004, using such stones in hospital and laboratory environments has been prohibited in European and American countries.

Zahedan granite is partially excluded from this pattern to the point where the regulations for hospitals construction in Iran, only allows this type of granite stone.

Advantages of granite stone

  • High compressive and bending strength
  • High abrasion resistance; suitable for hard applications where objects are dragged on the surface
  • Heat resistant.
  • Best choices for outdoor paving and high traffic areas
  • High sand-ability resulting in a shiny surface in the sanded type
  • Production ability with various types of processing
  • Very little water and oil absorption in most types
  • Resistant to acidic conditions
  • Its different applications in the building
  • Stain resistant
  • Easy and convenient maintenance (due to the smooth and shiny surface and resistance to water and stains)
  • Creating a beautiful look in the interior decoration due to granite special patterns
  • Compatibility with other building materials such as wood, glass, cement

Disadvantages of granite

  • Overweight
  • Lack of proper adhesion due to low porosity
  • The possibility of being separated from the facade (when assembling as a facade, attention should be paid to its dimensions and the way of connection)
  • Assembling of granite takes time
  • Needs powerful devices and machines for extraction
  • Being expensive due to difficulty in extraction
  • Granite is not thermal and sound insulation.
  • Limited variation in color (of course, foreign granite stones have a suitable color variation)
  • Its carcinogenic property in case of radiation of radioactive rays to granite stone
  • Not using granite in hospital spaces, laboratories where there are X-rays and gamma rays

Granite is one of those building stones that has the most mines in the world and in the country. Granite stone, with a share of 20%, after marble, has taken a significant share of these Iranian stone mines. The provinces of South Khorasan and Razavi, West and East Azerbaijan, Isfahan, Zanjan, Yazd, and Hamedan are important provinces in the field of extraction and production of building granite.

Among the best mines of this material in the country, we can mention black granite in Natanz, Tuisarkan in Hamadan, Zahedan and Nehbandan in South Khorasan. The import of this stone is unnecessary. The design and color of this product are different in each region, and this is a great advantage for the country, which makes it unnecessary to import this stone.

The granite stones of domestic mines are often in black and white tonality. In the meantime, there are uniform black and red stones and types of green color (Birjand). In general, the granite stones of Iranian mines can be divided into four color categories:

  • Granites of gray tone composed of cotton flower seeds
  • Black granites
  • Green series granites of Birjand mines
  • Red granite

In Stoneman, both in the scale of the mine and the number of slabs available in the showroom, after marble, granite is the most abundant, which is presented with leather and polished finishing.
